A day-long strike to protest the arrival of Indian troops in Kashmir in 1947 shut most of the shops and businesses in the revolt-hit region's main city. Indian troops landed in Kashmir on October 27, 1947, after the Himalayan region's Hindu ruler-Maharaja Hari Singh sought help from India to fend off an invasion by Pakistan-backed tribesmen. The Maharaja initially held out for independence of Kashmir, when Britain withdrew from the Indian subcontinent in August 1947. After Indian troops landed in Kashmir and restored peace,the then prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru said he would agree to United Nations resolutions calling for a plebiscite on the status of the region. Eravikulam National Park is a 97 km national park located along the Western Ghats in the Idukki district of Kerala in India, between 1005'N - 1020'N latitude and 770'E - 7710'E longitude. See:map.  The park is administered by the Kerala Department of Forests and Wildlife, Munnar Wildlife Division, together with the nearby Mathikettan Shola National Park, Anamudi Shola National Park, Pambadum Shola National Park, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and the Kurinjimala Sanctuary.[1] The Western Ghats, Anamalai Sub-Cluster, including all of Eravikulam National Park, is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site.[2]
